The horrific fall at Ashburton yesterday that took young apprentice jockey Megan Taylor’s life will surely result in a hard look at the ongoing condition of NZ tracks by the Racing Board, that’s two this year with Taiki Yanagida also losing his life in August…
I was watching the race, and Red Orchid seemed to simply lose its footing in the home straight, bringing down three other horses, whose jockeys thankfully avoided serious injury. Rain on good, firm tracks can result in ice-rink-like conditions, and it seems that’s the case here…

He’s got a decent strike rate, especially at this distance, and jockey has won twice on him. Up against an odds-on hotpot in a small field, but at $9.50 could be the value bet.

Led and won easy here in June to clear maidens, then did nothing next two over longer before a four month break. Returns today back to the 1200m, which will suit this front-runner, won a recent trial and will go round as $2.20 fav.
