Five of the best!!
Scratchings and another embarrassing abandoned meeting (Hastings) left us with just 16 from the book yesterday, but we still managed to bang in five quality winners, a third and two fourth, including two more Hall of Famers!!
We thought Tara Jasmine (2 units ew) would need the run, but noted her fine first-up form (6:3-0) and she duly obliged at an eye-watering $26.20/$3.50.
Over at Rosehill, we had Perspiration (3 units ew) down as a sleeper at opening odds of $23, and back on the easier going he rocked up at $10.10/$2.90.
The other three were well-fancied favs, and our best bet Broadsiding (10 unit win) produced and amazing finish to get up on the line after being backed in from $3.30 to $2.
Ndola (8 unit win) got us off to an early start at Sandown, another backed in with some venom from $5.50 to $2.60.
And late on at Toowoomba, Talk Time (8 unit win) was also well-supported, getting up at $2.20.
Third for Devine Miss (4 units ew, $2.90) and fourths for Such A Whit and Terminus.
That’s a 31% winning strike rate and a 50% return rate overall!

Two wins early in the year haven’t been followed up. Needed the resuming run at Morks 15 days ago and has a 3:2-0 record second-up and drops significantly in grade today, $5 in a small field and can improve.

Another down in grade and back in distance for this one, $3.30 second fav in another small field, chance to win.

Matawai
Mornington R6
Matawai is a former Kiwi filly, noted winning on debut at Taupo in September before heading instantly off to Aus to run in a G2 at Caulfield in October. Resumed from the 215 day break in May to run the talented Baraqiel to 1.8 lengths before a close sixth in a BM70 in June, then dropped back in grade at the Lakeside and B Shinn rode a beautifully timed race to get her up. We were bullish about her chances 25 days ago at Sandown, but were a little disappointed with Shinn’s ride as he left it too late to get going on her, and she ran fourth in a blanket finish. Luke Currie onboard today, out to the mile, she’ll take some beating today, $2.50 fav.

Last win was just over a year ago and while he’s run a few places since, he needs to pick up to feature. Down in grade, out to 2200m will suit, but needs to be closer to take advantage of his potential big finish. $26 outsider here.

Finished off well for a third and a second this prep, the rise to 1350m should suit, easy EW at $7.

Resumes from a 133 day break, rarely far away, placed two from four at the track and 11:3-3 at the distance, plus first-up he’s 4:1-2 and 11:3-4 on good going. The $23 looks generous, he’s our sleeper in this and I fancy him to make the frame here…

Resumes from a six month absence after running last at Oakbank in March, but prior form was sound. She’s 6:1-2 first-up, nice trial here 12 days ago, fav jockey onboard, T&Ds are super, giving her a very good show of making the frame here at $10.
