Blackbooking…

The art of blackbooking is somewhat different to tipping horses based on form. One would assume that every tipping service who bases their tips on form would be giving the same tip for each race, usually the short-priced favourite, something the average punter can find out themselves by simply reading the form on the racecard, as there’s usually a form-rating included.

Blackbooking, on the other hand, involves watching races. Lots of them. And noting such information as blocked runs, fast finishes, missing the start, or simply bad rides by the jockey, and applying them to the next race. All this accumulated data then goes into the blackbookers tips for the day.

Of course, like any other system, it’s not perfect, otherwise we’d all be sitting here raking untold amounts of winnings, but what it does do is identify value runners, those big-odds chances that get up and pay the rent for a week.

That’s why it’s so satisfying when that information comes together to produce winners at those big odds. Sure, the system also produces short-priced tips, but the level of big odds winners PG’s Tips supplies would be way above your average form-guide tipping sites… just look our Hall of Fame, which features winners in at least double figures, and you’ll see we’ve tipped 153 big odds winners in under two years, that’s almost two per week, biggest being a $73 shot last year.

So, a lot of satisfaction in yesterday’s two winners from our three tips… More Than Words (5 units ew), noted being ridden way too far off the pace in a couple of her races this year, and getting the services of the excellent Tina Comignaghi, was ridden just off the pace and powered away for a superb win at $8.10/$2.90, fully living up to her hard-to-beat status…

Red Hawk (5 units ew) was noted in debut almost two years ago, and obviously has had some issues subsequently, so it was extremely gratifying to watch him resume with a big run for second last month, then win a recent trial, and when we saw Jamie Mott onboard yesterday, it was no-brainer, and he duly obliged with a leg in the air at $3.10/$1.60 ($4 if you got on early!)

And we recommended an EW trixie including Tina’s other ride for us Telling Tales, another requiring a forward run, which he got, but couldn’t go on with it after having every chance, which was unfortunate as it denied us a share of the $27K qadi and a $9K trixie collect. Still made good money on the other two though…

So having spruiked ourselves up, let’s see what we can supply the punter today, with 23 from the book…

NZ first…

THE FIRST LINK, POSER

Te Rapa, 6

TFL returned to his early good form nine days ago at Hastings, winning for us with a sustained late run at $7. Untested at 2200m, untroubled by the heavy ground, and can add value here at $14. Fav is an up-and-coming mare in Poser, Tegan having won two in a row on her, and she’s up in grade today but hard to beat at $3.20.

BET: TFL 4 units ew, Poser 10 unit win, exotics

CRICKETS CHIRPING

Otaki, 5

A classic next-timer after her debut second three weeks ago. The apprentice elected to try for the narrow gap on the inside rail and just got closed out, gets Lisa up top today, and shares co-fav status in this in what looks like a race in three. $3.30 on offer, we’ll stick with our girl to go one better…

BET: 8 unit win

ENRICO

Otaki, 8

Broke maiden status at his third attempt at Awapuni before a very close up fifth there three weeks ago. $5.50 makes him an easy EW wager…

BET: 10 units ew.

Include with CC in leg one for the qadi, field the other two legs…

BERMADEZ

Moonee Valley, 5

Was in a rich vein of form early last year but has dropped off. First run at the Valley, will need to be closer to the speed by the time they hit the final bend… $13 on offer in a small field, but does get in-form Billy Pinn up top…

BET: 4 unit win

JAYKAYANN

Moonee Valley, 6

After three excellent wins in a row, it was a tough watch as she ran a plain fifth 7 weeks ago at Sandown as odds-on fav. Trialled well for her return 10 days ago, Ben Melham hops inboard, can make amends today as $3.80 fav.

BET: 10 unit win

CHANDON BURJ

Moonee Valley, 8

Recent form not great, but has good T&D stats for when she’s raced here. Olly hasn’t missed a place on her in three and she’s unbeaten at this distance and likes the soft, which is maybe why she presents as $6.50 second fav. Can bounce back based on that…

BET: 3 units ew

SUPIDO BEAUTY

Randwick, 3

Back from a long spell and won a trial 10 days ago, so should be ready for this. Value at $11 all day…

BET: 5 units ew

SUPER PURSUIT

Has been very competitive this prep and can feature again here at $10. Watch for him late.

EXPLORING, SOCIAL CONSCIENCE

Morphettville, 8

Exploring resumed with an all-the-way win at Flem 2 weeks back and looks well-placed to win this as $2.20 fav. SC resuming, may need the run over the 1000m at $23.

BET: Exploring 10 unit win, SC 2 units ew, exotics.

COCO ROX, ENTERPRISE POMME

Eagle Farm, 8

CR needed the resuming run at Doomben before flaying them by 3 lengths at Grafton 16 days ago. On -pacer who’ll need to reserve something for the last 100m, but very capable as a $9 shot… EP sports super T&Ds plus other stats for this as $4.80 second fav, big chance also.

BET: Can back both 5 units ew, exotics obviously, but include the short fav…
