She was a hot tip via the stable connections in late July at Rotorua, and rightly so after winning two in a row and very good career stats, but she got back ear;y and stayed there, maybe just a touch short for her, and back to mile will suit today, chance to redeem herself as $2.40 fav.

Has won on the course and mostly on heavy but hasn’t threatened this prep. Down in grade and up in distance, another who needs to improve to figure as the $23 outsider…

Matawai
Sandown R7
Matawai is a former Kiwi filly, noted winning on debut at Taupo in September before heading instantly off to Aus to run in a G2 at Caulfield in October. Resumed from the 215 day break in May to run the talented Baraqiel to 1.8 lengths before a close sixth in a BM70 in June, then dropped back in grade 21 days ago at the Lakeside and B Shinn rode a beautifully timed race to get her up at $3.50, and certainly put herself on the watchlist. Up in grade and distance, but she’s fitter now, Shinn sticks significantly, and will take some beating in this as the $3.10 fav, though it does look a race in two with Teser.

We were looking for Eye Pea Oh to be ridden a touch more conservatively this T&D 14 days ago, after fading late in her previous two runs, but they may have over-compensated as she was near-last approaching the turn, then bolted home for second behind today’s fav, paying $2.40 the place. Certainly marked down for next time, and here she is, $7 shot and worth an EW shot.

Started this prep with a promising fourth and a nice win at odds but the jump to CL3 proving too tough with two finishes down the track. EW at $26…
